Chiller Compressor Installations

Westminster, Colorado

The hotel's rooftop chiller had lost half its compressors. Four of the eight had shorted to ground, all on the same circuit, and needed to be replaced.

We covered the roof with tarps and Masonite to protect it, recovered the refrigerant from the affected circuit per EPA guidelines, and pulled the four failed compressors. We installed four new compressors with new contactors, along with liquid and suction line filter driers that have replaceable cores.

Before charging the system, we pressure tested the circuit with dry nitrogen and pulled a vacuum to clear out air, moisture and other non-condensables. Then we put in a new refrigerant charge, started the new compressors and adjusted the charge.

A compressor that shorts to ground can leave acid in the system, so the job doesn't end at startup. After 24 hours of run time, we test for acid. If the test is clean, the suction line cores come out and the liquid line cores get replaced. If it isn't, we keep changing suction cores and retesting until it is.

When the work was done, we hauled the old compressors and all debris off the roof.
