Central Boiler & Hydronic System Upgrades

Hastings College partnered with Rasmussen Mechanical Services Hastings Boiler Installation team for a series of coordinated boiler and hydronic upgrades across campus, including the Science Building and Babcock Hall. The work focused on improving efficiency, reliability, and long-term system performance.

Project Scope

• Removed obsolete boiler and burner equipment and installed a new LAARS Mighty Therm2 85% efficient hot water boiler.

• Installed a new Power Flame burner with UL-approved gas train, updated electrical service, and completed startup, combustion tuning, and safety testing.

• Reused existing flue, stack, gas piping, and select controls where feasible.

• Replaced and added Bell & Gossett pumps to improve system capacity and provide redundancy.

• Completed piping, valve, and insulation upgrades across multiple mechanical rooms.

• Installed a Spirovent air/dirt separator and 60-gallon ASME expansion tank to enhance hydronic system performance.

Results

• Improved heating system efficiency and reliability.

• Added redundancy to critical pumping systems.

• Enhanced air and dirt removal for longer equipment life and more stable operation.
