DIGESTER BOILER REPLACEMENT

Rapid City’s Water Reclamation Facility depends on two boilers to heat its digesters. One boiler had failed and the second was nearing the end of its service life. The digester boilers are critical to plant operations and permit compliance, so replacement could not be delayed.

Because of long equipment lead times, the city pre-purchased two new boilers and then bid the installation. RMS transported the owner-furnished boilers from Sioux City to the plant. Our Rapid City boiler installation team then installed both units, and piped them into the existing hot water system. Our scope also included insulation, test and balance, and permitting, all coordinated under our contract.

During installation, the existing hot water return header and heat exchanger piping did not fit the new boiler layout. RMS relocated both to fit the new boilers. The plant’s two 3-way mixing valves were not performing under existing conditions, so we replaced their internal components.

RMS continues to support the City of Rapid City and currently provides boiler maintenance at the Rapid City Landfill.
