Steam Plant Repairs

Sacred Heart Monastery in Yankton runs a steam plant with three boilers that feeds the buildings through a tunnel system. Since 2021 our Yankton Boiler Repair team has been gradually replacing that system a section at a time.

It started in 2021 with the steam valves. During a nighttime steam shutdown we replaced an 8" expansion joint and a 4" gate valve in the tunnel, an 8" gate valve in the boiler room, and a 4" relief valve in the basement mechanical room.

In 2022 we replaced all of the feedwater piping to Boiler #3, from the pump discharge to the boiler, with new 2" schedule 80 pipe, socket welded, insulated and jacketed. We replaced the gas piping to that boiler at the same time.

In 2023 we replaced feedwater pump #2 and the butterfly valves on the suction side of the hydronic pumps.

In 2024 we replaced the safety relief valve on the 30 psi system, the secondary stop valve on Boiler #1, and the pneumatic actuators and air solenoids on three condensate return 3-way valves.

In 2025 we replaced the four chemical feed pots on the deaerator. Later in the year we replaced the blowdown piping on all three boilers: new schedule 80 pipe from the first valve off each boiler at the low water cutoffs, bottom blows and surface skim, all new slow and quick opening valves, new check valves, a trenched main, and a reconnection to the flash tank.
