QUADRUPLE BURNER AND CONTROLS RETROFITS

This plant runs four steam boilers, and all four had worn linkages and aging flame safeguards. On a linkage-controlled burner, the fuel valve and air damper are tied together mechanically. As the linkage wears, the fuel-air ratio drifts. Our boiler installation team retrofitted all four boilers with Autoflame controls, which drives fuel and air with separate servo motors, so there’s no linkage left to wear.

Two years later, we were called in because the Gordon-Piatt burners on two of the boilers were obsolete. With an obsolete burner, every failure turns into a hunt for parts. We replaced both with new Webster burners and scheduled the swaps for Saturdays and Sundays. That same year we replaced the gas manifold and dry oven, put in new refractory, and baked it out and tuned it.

We’ve been back every year since for tune-ups, safety device testing and burner cone replacements.
