HURST BOILER: FULL RETUBE AND NEW TUBESHEET

The facility know their hurst boiler was in bad shape, but there was no way to know how bad until the tubes came out. So before we pulled a single tube, we set an RMS 800 BHP rental boiler in the alley behind the plant on a rush schedule. Our boiler installation team piped it in, insulated the lines, built a weather hut over it and added a gas meter.

Then we went to work. We pulled the tubes and brought in third-party NDE and an engineering review of the tubesheet. The damage we found meant a bigger repair. We replaced the hot pass tubesheet, patched the shell and replaced all tubes on both passes. The boiler room access was tight, so a combined crew of pipefitters and boilermakers rigged everything out and back in. The Authorized Inspector was part of the repair.

The lesson: a retube on a large firetube boiler takes weeks. If you don’t have spare capacity, line up the rental before the tubes come out, not after.

We still service this plant’s boilers today.
